WORK ON THREE PROJECTS UNDERWAY
Silence is currently working on three projects. The first is Peklenska
pomaranca (A Clockwork Orange), director Matjaz
Pograjc's rendition of Anthony Burgess' celebrated
novel. The play, produced by Mladinsko
theatre, opens on December 6th in Ljubljana (SLO).
See Unreleased and Concerts
/ Related for details
The second project is an unconventional adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo
and Juliet. The production marks the first collaboration between
director Ana Tomovic and Silence. The music is... well, Italian.
The duet drew inspiration from Italian Neorealist films, especially Federico
Fellini's La strada and Nino Rota's score for the movie. The play,
produced by Theater.Oberhausen,
opens on January 15th 2010 in Oberhausen
(D). See Concerts / Related for details
Last (but not least) is - Silence's new studio album. The duet has been working
on new songs intermittently over the past two years. We'd love to tell you
more about the album, but we love teasing you even more.
More information regarding all three projects will follow shortly.
SHOW YOUR FACE! and LOVE UNTO DEATH: NEW
DATES
Three performances of Show Your Face! will take place

The play features live music performed by saxophonist Ugis Vitins
and Silence. The performances - most likely the last opportunities to see
the play in Slovenia - will be Silence's first live appearances since November
2008. Boy, time sure does fly.
Ljubezen na smrt (Love Unto Death), the only play
/ musical / banquet in the world that placates both spiritual and physical
hunger (and features live music written by Silence) is back! Eight performances
will take place in December (in Ljubljana). A word of advice:
book the tickets as soon as possible, only 78 viewers are admitted per play.

OPENING SOON: HAMLET
Silence are off to Madrid, where they will finalize the score for Tomaz
Pandur's new project, Hamlet, and attend the play's
premiere. Hamlet, produced by Teatro Español, opens at the
Matadero on February 12th - see Concerts-Related
for details. The play features a cast of acclaimed Spanish players led by
Blanca Portillo... yup, as Hamlet.
Hamlet is, beyond doubt, Silence's most pretending and heterogeneous assignment
to date. The four-hour play required an equally mammoth soundtrack. Nearly
five months of work were required for the 90 minutes of original music featured
in the play. The score features a multitude of remarkable instrumentalists:
pianist Srebrenka Poljak, cellist Igor Mitrovic,
contrabassist Ziga Golob, saxophonist Primoz Fleischman,
drummer Janez Gabric and, last but not least, a 14-piece
string orchestra conducted by Tomislav Facini. The
score also contains a selection of previously released Silence songs and one
new track, Mousetrap, interpreted by actor Asier
Etxeandia.

SHOW YOUR FACE! AWARDED
Show Your Face! - the play features an original soundtrack
written and performed live by Silence and Ugis Vitins - was
awarded for collective artistic achievement at the
central Slovene theatre festival, the 42nd
Borstnik Meeting.
The jury wrote: "In Show Your Face! ... Betontanc, Umka.lv and Silence
create a touching and vulnerable tale ... utilising their diverse and suggestive
artistic skills. The central figure, a kind of postmodern Woyzeck ... attracts
dramaturgic connotations - as well as the desires of the audience - due to
the virtuosic animation, acting, choreography and music of the aforementioned
collectives. It is the sinergy between the performances and the audience that
turns the play into genuine theatre magic."

opens on September 12th at the Centro
Cultural de la Villa de Madrid.
The duet is currently in Madrid, supervising the recording of the score. The
recording sessions are taking place at the renowned Teatro
Real. The score, conducted by José Antonio Montaño and
performed by Margarita Sikoeva (violin), Dragos Balan
(cello), Riccardo Bini (piano) and the Orquesta
escuela de la Sinfonica de Madrid, marks Silence's first venture
into the realm of classical music. Talks regarding the release of the soundtrack
are currently underway. More information coming soon.

LOVE UNTO DEATH
Ljubezen na smrt - Koncert za kuharja, 6 vajencev in 3 pomivalce
(Love Unto Death - Concert for a cook, 6 apprentices and 3 dish-washers),
Matjaz Pograjc's new play, opens on Thursday, April
the 12th at the Mladinsko theatre in Ljubljana.
The play's versatile cast acts, cooks and sings. The actors will prepare numerous
delicious specialities under the supervision of chef Danilo Ivanusa.
In case you're wondering: yes, viewers get served. The only downside
is that, due to the limited amount of grub, only 78 viewers are admitted per
show. Heed our advice: reserve your tickets in time.
The actors will also perform - live - 15 songs written by Silence.
The lyricists, albeit new in the music business, were all remarkable talents
and jolly good fellows; Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine, Bataille, Heym,
Trakl, Benn, Poe, Lorca, Lasker-Schuler and Wilde. The songs
are performed - in pure musical style - by the play's cast and three remarkable
musicians - Blaz Celarec (drums, percussion, clarinet), Ziga
Golob (double bass, steel guitar, ukulele, singing saw) and Joze
Salej (upright piano).

FASSBINDER REPLACED BY POETS
Unfortunately, the Fassbinder Foundation denied Mladinsko
theatre the right to use Rainer Werner Fassbinder's lyrics for the purposes
of Matjaz Pograjc's new play. Even though replacement lyrics
had to be found, the concept of the play - theatre, cuisine & live music
- remains unchanged. Silence will therefore set to music a selection of equally
sinister poems written by Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Bataille, Verlaine, Trakl,
Lorca, Poe and others. The opening night is still scheduled for April.

TESLA ELECTRIC COMPANY IN CROATIA
Tomaz Pandur's new play was performed nine times at
the Minor fortress on the Mali Brijun island between August 11th
and August 21st. The performances - all sold out - received the warmest of
receptions by the public and rave reviews in the media. Silence's contribution
did not go unnoticed:
Novi List (Croatia): "Silence's music, performed
live by Hladnik and Benko, provides a special poetic dimension..."
Nedjeljni Jutarnji (Croatia): "... Benko's and Hladnik's
excellent music stood out."
Glas Istre (Croatia) noticed "... the beautiful music performed
live by pianist Hladnik and Benko, singer with a magical voice... Their
music is the perfect counterpoint to stage action..."
Jutarnji List - Vecernje izdanje (Croatia): "Two elements
of the play are extraordinary: scenography and music... The duet Silence deserves
to be seen. Hladnik and Benko... transmute the play into a pop-spectacle."
Vecer (Slovenia) stated: "Benko has a wonderful voice. Together
with pianist Hladnik, they created mystic, emotive music..."
The Slovene premiere of Tesla Electric Company is scheduled
for August 30th. The play will
be one of the closing acts of this year's Ljubljana festival.

TESLA ELECTRIC COMPANY - FIRST REVIEWS
Tomaz Pandur's new play, Tesla Electric Company
- which features a soundtrack written and performed live by Silence - opened
on July 19th at the Teatro Nuovo Giovanni in Udine.
The first reviews are in:
Delo (Slovenia) described the play as "...an artistically
unbounded and authorially sovereign stage poem..." in which Silence
"...are elemental in acoustically shaping the melancholy emotional
feel of the play..."
Il Gazzetino (Italy) perceives Tesla Electric Company
as a play "...that remains impressed in the spectator's memory. Not
only because of the excellence of the actors, the beauty of the music performed
live or the ingenuity of the lighting solutions. It is the blending of all
these - and other - elements, the effectiveness of their composition and the
strong artistic vision that Tomaz Pandur brings to life with his direction."
Novi List (Croatia) stated: "...we watched a mature
Tomaz Pandur, ...calm and exceedingly poetic" and noticed "...the
play's recurrent gentle theme, imposingly executed by Benko and Hladnik."
Primorski Dnevnik (Slovenia) noted "...the music,
masterly performed live by pianist Hladnik and singer Benko. The excellent
pop style of the soundtrack, to which the director assigned the fundamental
role in creating the emotive mood, is worthy of independent promotion."

The play now moves to an idyllic Croatian island, Mali Brijun,
where ten performances are to be held between August 11th
and August 21st. Spectators are in for a memorable experience
- a ferry ride to the island and a spectacular open-air performance in the
atrium of the picturesque Minor fortress.

TRANS SLOVENIA EXPRESS REVIEWS
The first reviews of Trans
Slovenia Express vol. 2 are in. A couple of Silence related excerpts:
"...a new, magnificent digital - analogue interpretation of Hall
Of Mirrors. The great voice of Silence's singer, lyrist and composer
Boris Benko comes through once again - in a very successful version
of Radioactivity..."
Katarina Mazurkiewicz, Satt.org
"More pleasing for me, however, is the darkly prodigious, cello
scraping gothic of Rozmarinke’s take on Radioactivity..."
Alan Sargeant, 2-4-7-music.com (Crud Magazine)
"...Rozmarinke provide a wake-up call with Radioactivity,
complete with cello, pizzicato violin and piano over breakbeats and loops.
It's the best cover of one of Kraftwerk's finest pieces since The
Divine Comedy's epic take back in the late '90s".
